| Occupy Rose Parade: Protesters Occupy 123rd Annual Rose Parade 2012 Posted: 02 Jan 2012 07:32 PM PST Perhaps the most anticipated float of the 2012 Rose Parade is an unofficial entrant: a giant “Occupy Octopus” made out of plastic bags. Occupy The Rose Parade protesters plan to march the 70-by-40-feet “float,” along with a giant blown-up version of the United State Constitution, at the end of the Rose Parade. Occupy’s “People’s Parade” will be marching against corporate personhood and the foreclosure crisis, according to the organizers’ site, as well as protesting the influence of corporate money in politics. Hundreds of protesters gathered at Singer Park in Pasadena hours before the Rose Parade to practice holding their floats and making more hand-held signs. By 8 a.m. PST, there were about 400 people, making signs and munching on snacks before the march. Rose Parade bystanders gave a mixed response to the marchers as they made their way to the starting line of the parade. One man, who declined to give his name, told the Huffington Post, “I agree with some Occupy beliefs, but do not think this is the right place to do it.” Others with him also agreed that the Rose Parade wasn’t the appropriate venue for a protest. Zia Back, one of the protesters, told the Huffington Post that she had seen pleas on the Occupy the Rose Parade forum to halt their demonstration. “It said, ‘please don’t come because I’m bringing my kids to the parade,’” said Back. “But Occupy the Rose Parade sets a good example and is about the future of our youth,” she insisted. Another activist, Pablo Lopez, who is a student at Cal Poly Pomona, recalled similar objections leading up to the protest. “People on TV were saying that even though their hearts used to be with Occupy, they aren’t anymore because of Occupy the Rose Parade,” Lopez said. Wearing a collared shirt and tie, Lopez hopes that his friendly face and demeanor will work against hostility toward the Occupy movement. Activist Fernando Garces, who was there at 6 a.m., told the Los Angeles Times that the group was looking into occupying events like the Grammys in the future. Occupy The Rose Parade is led by Peter Thottam, a controversial figure in the Occupy movement. While he had initially hoped to be joined by thousands of protesters, he’s since tempered expectations and now thinks 1,000 will be there. Thottam admitted to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that “Occupy The Rose Parade” did not get formal approval from the Occupy Los Angeles general assembly, which could explain low turnout numbers. Occupy Pasadena demonstrators also declined to formally endorse the march as well. Occupy The Rose Parade’s organizers endorse a completely peaceful, non-violent protest. To make sure things go smoothly, activists have engaged with the Pasadena police in hours of meetings, and dozens of “peacekeepers” in bright green vests will keep the peace during the march. | Afghan Girl Sahar Gul: Sahar Gul Forced Into Prostitution In India For Medical Treatment Posted: 02 Jan 2012 08:54 AM PST A 15-year-old Afghan girl severely tortured for months by her in-laws in an attempt to force her into prostitution will be sent to India for medical treatment, an Afghan official said Monday. Sahar Gul’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law were arrested and her husband was being sought, said Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi. The case has shocked Afghanistan, though rights activists say serious abuses against women and girls in the conservative society are common. President Hamid Karzai has said that whoever used violence against Gul will be punished. According to officials in northeastern Baghlan province, the in-laws kept Gul in a basement for six months, ripped her fingernails out, tortured her with hot irons and broke her fingers. Police freed her last week. The public health and women’s affairs ministers visited Gul, who is now in a Kabul hospital. She was freed from a basement at her husband’s home last week after her uncle called the local police. “It is a violent act that is unacceptable in the 21st century,” Sediqi told reporters. “We are thankful of Sahar Gul’s uncle.” He added that “if the police had not arrived in time she may have died.” He did not provide details on the treatment she would seek in India. But many Afghans with serious injuries or illnesses prefer to go to India or Pakistan for care because of poor medical services in Afghanistan. Gul was married about seven months ago. Jawad Basharat, spokesman for the provincial police chief in Baghlan, said an arrest warrant had been issued for her husband, who is serving in the Afghan army. “After police found out about the small girl Sahar Gul they took action and found her in the basement of the house in very bad condition,” Basharat said. “Her nails were pulled out, she has injuries in all parts of her body, there are signs of burning on her body, she was suffering from different kinds of injuries.” He said that her mother-in-law and other members of the family were reportedly involved in what he described as “criminal activities,” which he said included selling alcohol and prostitution. According to preliminary reports, Basharat said, “they tried to force her into prostitution and she did not agree. This was one of the reasons that they detained her in the basement for six months.” Rahima Zarifi, the provincial director of women’s affairs in Baghlan, said a commission had been set up under Karzai’s orders to investigate the case. “According to the neighbors in the area, Sahar Gul’s in-law’s were not good people. Besides selling alcohol, they were involved in prostitution and that is why they put pressure on Sahar Gul to join with them. She was not happy with it and that is why they put her in the basement, detained her for six months and tortured her,” Zarifi said. “They pulled out her nails. You can see the signs of torture and abuse all over her body, several types of torture and abuse. They even burned her with hot irons.” Health Minister Suraya Dalil said that despite progress in women’s rights, work remained to be done. “This is the very most extreme case that we have seen. That a child, that a girl child has been abused, has been physically abused, psychologically abused. It is an issue that shows that we are still need to work a lot with regard to education, with regard to awareness, with regard to social and economic development,” Dalil said. Despite much progress since the fall of the Taliban 10 years ago, women’s rights in Afghanistan remain a problem area in a country with a strict patriarchal culture Under Taliban rule, girls’ schools were banned and women could only leave the house accompanied by a male family member. A U.N. report issued in November found that a 2009 law meant to protect Afghan women from a host of abusive practices, including rape, forced marriage and the trading of women to settle disputes was being undermined by spotty enforcement. The Law on the Elimination of Violence Against Women was passed in August 2009 and had raised hopes among women’s rights activists that Afghan women would get to fight back against abuses that had been ignored under Taliban rule. The law criminalized many abuses for the first time, including domestic violence, child marriage, driving a woman to resort to suicide and the selling and buying of women. Yet the report found only a small percentage of reported crimes against women are pursued by the Afghan government. Between March 2010 and March 2011, prosecutors opened 594 investigations involving crimes under the law. That’s only 26 percent of the 2,299 incidents registered by the Afghan human rights commission, the U.N. report said. Prosecutors filed indictments in only 155 cases, or 7 percent of the total number of crimes reported. Sometimes victims were pressured to withdraw their complaints or to settle for mediation by traditional councils, the report said. Sometimes prosecutors didn’t proceed with mandatory investigations for violent acts like rape or prostitution. Other times, police simply ignored complaints, the report said. Related posts:

"One person has been killed in the firing and two others are injured," police said. Official sources said a group of around 500 persons staged protests outside the NHPC-run Uri power project at Boniyar against electricity crisis in the area in the morning. As the protestors marched towards the main gate of the power project, the CISF personnel guarding the complex allegedly opened fire, the sources said. Altaf Ahmad Sood (25) died on the spot, while 70-year-old Abdul Majid Khan and 25-year-old Parvaiz Ahmad Khan sustained injuries, they said. The sources said the firing incident led to tension in the area as the residents have gathered outside the power project demanding arrest of the CISF personnel responsible for the death. The incident could have been avoided if CISF men had co-ordination with state police,’ he added. The Omar Abdullah government has expressed its ‘deep regret on the tragic firing incident,’ an official spokesman said. ‘Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF), whose troopers opened the fire, are not a part of the CI (Counter Insurgency) grid operating in Jammu and Kashmir and have been hired by the NHPC (National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) exclusively for the security of their installations across the state, and are not under the operational command of either the unified headquarters or the state government,’ he said. The spokesman said that the state government has taken up the matter with the union home ministry, lodging a serious protest and demanding stern, exemplary action against the officers responsible for the firing incident. The chief minister has dispatched a team comprising Public Health Engineering Minister Taj Mohiuddin, Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani and Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda to the village. The Kashmir Valley has been facing an acute power shortage that the state government attributes to low water flows in the major rivers here and power pilferage by the consumers. Protests have been seen in Srinagar and other towns in the valley. ‘The (power supply) situation is not likely to improve till the beginning of March,’ said an official of the power development department. Police arrested two men, both poor farmers, last week and they told police they killed the girl to appease their gods and get a better harvest, Das said. Tati was walking home after watching television at a neighbor’s house when she was kidnapped, Das said. The two men confessed to cutting her open and removing her liver as an offering. Das said the police had gathered enough evidence, apart from the confessions, to charge the two with murder. They would face life in prison or even the death sentence if convicted. The men were described as “tribals,” a term referring to the region’s indigenous people, most of whom remain mired in poverty and illiteracy. Human sacrifices are rare in India but get prominent attention every few years. A deep belief in traditional healers, or witch doctors, is common in mostly tribal Chhattisgarh. Sarabjit has been in Pakistan jails for more than 20 years and has been convicted of staging four bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan in 1990 that claimed 14 lives. Raza has now decided to launch a `Sarbajit Bachao` campaign all the way to the Indian and Pakistan parliaments. For this, he will rope in the help of all the Punjabis in the entertainment industry. “We all know about Sarabjit`s tragic case. He has languished in a Lahore prison for 21 years now. Even if he has done anything wrong, as the Pakistani government claims, his punishment has far exceeded the misdeed. It`s time we woke up in one voice to ask for Sarabjit to be returned to India,” said Raza. The campaign was prompted by a visit to Amritsar last week. “I was at the Harminder Sahib in Amritsar on Saturday. Sarabjit`s family saw me on television and sought me out through a friend in Amritsar…It`s one thing to read about someone`s plight. But to see Sarabit`s family`s distress first-hand was a heartrending experience, and one that I cannot bring myself to put aside and move on with life. The suffering that Sarabjit`s wife Sukhprit Kaur and his two daughters have undergone shook me to the core. “Sarabjit`s daughter Poonam told me that she once went across border with food for her father in prison. But it took three days for her to get permission to visit her father in jail. The food was spoilt by then. I was devastated by the daughter`s grief. If as an actor I am not able to use my voice for this cause, then I am afraid my life is not worth much,” he said. Raza has a definite plan. “I have formulated several levels of protest… the first is to get an active participation of the entire Punjab entertainment industry. I`m also framing letters to the Indian prime minister and the president. Letters to the Pakistan`s prime minister and president are being sent through the Pakistani embassy, as too our memorandum of protest through the Ministry of External Affairs.” A candlelight protest is being planned by Raza at the India-Pakistan border. “I don`t know what made Sarabjit`s family reach out to me. But they have placed their trust in me to get him back… Maybe they`re over-estimating my influence. But I am going to make a do-or-die effort for Sarabjit`s release.
