New Map of Earth Released by NASA – Most Complete Topographic Map of Earth

Posted: 13 Aug 2011 08:17 PM PDT

Most-Complete-Topographic-Map-EarthNASA and Japan released a new digital topographic map of Earth Monday that covers more of Earth than ever before. The map was produced with detailed dimensions from the space agency's Terra spacecraft.

The new global digital elevation model of Earth was created from nearly 1.3 million individual stereo-pair images collected by the Japanese Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer, or ASTER, instrument aboard Terra. NASA and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, known as METI, developed the data set. It is available online to users everywhere at no cost.

Previously, the most complete topographic set of data publicly available was from NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission which mapped 80% of Earth's landmass, between 60 degrees north latitude and 57 degrees south. The new Aster data expands coverage to 99%, from 83 degrees north latitude and 83 degrees south.

NASA expects the new map to be used in the fields of engineering, energy exploration, conservation, environmental management, public works design, firefighting, recreation, geology and city planning.

Aster is one of five Earth-observing instruments launched on Terra in December 1999. Aster acquires images from the visible to the thermal infrared wavelength region, with spatial resolutions ranging from about 15 to 90 meters (50 to 300 feet). A joint science team from the U.S. and Japan validates and calibrates the instrument and data products.

In the Bhutan Himalayas, Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer data have revealed significant spatial variability in glacier flow, such that the glacier velocities in the end zones on the south side exhibit significantly lower velocities (9 to 18 meters, or 30 to 60 feet per year), versus much higher flow velocities on the north side (18 to 183 meters, or 60 to 600 feet per year).

Dirty And Dark Tamilians: US Vice-Consul Maureen Chao Said “Dirty And Dark Tamilians”

Posted: 13 Aug 2011 07:30 PM PDT

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has claimed an apology from a US diplomat, apprehended in a strip after her comments of “dirty and dark” Tamilians.

The AIADMK head has said that US vice-counsul should remove the comment and apologise.

In a talk at the SRM University, US vice-consul Maureen Chao had said: “I was on a 24-hour train journey from Delhi to Orissa. But, after 72 hours, the train still did not come to the destination… and my skin became soiled and dark like the Tamilians.”

The US diplomat was recalling a visit to India she had made two decades before when she was a student. In the talk Chao had furthermore said, “Some 20 years before, I was a scholar like you and had an opening to manage a semester abroad. I chose to arrive to India, enthralled by the heritage and religion. I journeyed over villages to realise the heritage better. I was astonished at the graciousness and friendliness of the people.”

Going into a damage-control mode next her contentious comments, the US Consulate said, “During the talk Ms. Chao made an unsuitable comment. Ms. Chao profoundly laments if her regrettable comments outraged any individual, as that was absolutely not her intent”.

The Consulate said in a issue that the diplomat was recounting “positive recollections from her own study overseas knowledge in India 23 years ago”.

As US Secretary Hillary Clinton lately documented, the US-India joint project was founded on distributed standards of democracy, liberty and esteem for devout and heritage diversity, the Consulate issue said.

“The U.S. Consulate in Chennai and the U.S. Mission in India are pledged to supporting these distributed values”, it said.

Bandra Worli Sea Link @ Bandra to Worli- A new milestone in Mumbai (Bombay)

Posted: 13 Aug 2011 08:17 AM PDT

bandra-worli-sea-linkBandra Worli Sea Link :- After a long wait, finally Mumbai's (Bombay) new engineering marvel is open for the public. It is a unique bridge design for the Link Bridge to emerge as a landmark structure in the city. It strengthens the state's backbone as it is the most advanced and complex project ever to have been executed successfully.

Its Single tower supports 500 meter long cable-stayed bridge name Bandra Worli Sea Link at Bandra Channel and twin tower supported 350 m cable-stayed bridge at Worli Channel for each carriageway.

Presently, the Mahim Causeway is the only link connecting the western suburbs to island city of Mumbai. The existing north–southwestern corridor is highly congested and during the peak hours results in a bottleneck at Mahim Causeway. The sea link will act as an alternate route between the western suburbs of Mumbai and central Mumbai, in addition to the existing Mahim Causeway. This link will also form a part of the west island freeway. Access will be controlled on the Worli end by toll plazas on the Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Road, and on the Bandra end by toll plazas at Love Grove Junction.

The Rs 1,634-crore (Rs 16.34 billion) project of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has been executed by the private engineering and construction major, Hindustan Construction Company. It has been illuminated by Bajaj Electricals Limited Mumbai‘s new icon, the Bandra Worli Sea Link built by HCC (Hindustan Construction Company), has been selected by an independent jury of bridge engineering experts from the Indian Institution of Bridge Engineers (IIBE) to win the coveted “Most outstanding bridge -National award”. The award ceremony was held on 14th march at the Nehru Center in Worli.

Acknowledging the distinction, Mr. Vinayak Deshpande, President & COO – HCC (EPC & Construction) said, “We are privileged to receive this honor for the very first cable-stayed sea bridge built in open sea in India. HCC has a long experience in infrastructure development, yet building this sea link offered complex engineering and environmental challenges that motivated us to be innovative and do our best.”

Often referred to as an ‘engineering marvel’, the 8-lane, 600m long Bandra Worli Sea Link that connects the island city of Mumbai with its western suburbs is the first cable-stayed bridge built on the open sea in India and this project will be of immense value and utility to Mumbai. The main feature of the sea link project is the use of Bajaj-Kemrock glass fiber reinforced polymer street lighting poles. The need to use GRP poles has been necessitated by the highly corrosive saline atmosphere that the sea link will be perennially subjected to. The mechanical strength of these poles is equal to or better than conventional steel poles In all, HCC has built 321 Bridges, 43 Dams and Barrages, 15 Hydel Power Plants and 11 Nuclear Reactors, 60 km of Tunneling and 2,227 km of Roads and Expressways. HCC’s Overseas performance in the construction of bridges has also been impressive, with over 34 bridges built in Iraq alone.

The project was initiated more than 10 years ago but it was delayed due to public interest litigations. Meanwhile, the passage over the sea link will not be free. The authorities will charge a one-way toll of Rs. 50 for every car or light motor vehicle, Rs.75 for mini-buses, and Rs. 100 for heavy motor vehicles like buses and trucks. From June 2010, there will be a 5 per cent increase in toll charges.

For regular travelers, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) plans a monthly payment of Rs 2,500 that will allow them for multiple entries. Motorists can also buy a swipe card at an initial cost of Rs 300 and also pay a monthly toll. Or, for Rs 800, motorists can buy an electronic on-board unit and pay the monthly Rs 2,500.
However, nothing is perfect. This project is also associated with some drawbacks, which would can be a bottleneck in its success if not managed well. Some of them may be listed as:

1. No effective traffic management system.

2. The Bridge opens out in front of a school which has students coming in at 8:00am and 11:00am which is the Peak Traffic Time, as such no provisions have been made for it.

3. Also on either side of this road, there is a temple (Markandeshwar Mandir) and a shopping mall (Atria Shopping Mall). So the question of eased off traffic is totally fictional.

4. As a result of constant change of plans and other delays the cost of the bridge has risen 6 fold from Rs.300 Crore to Rs.1800 Crore. The amount of time to recover this cost would be at least 10 years.

5. It has also caused inconvenience to the residents of Worli Sea Face. The calm and quiet of this formerly traffic free area will be destroyed.

Some of the positive aspects may be shelled as:

• Estimated savings in Vehicle Operating Costs (VOC): Rs. 100 Crores per annum.

• The 5.6-km drive from Bandra to Worli over the sea link may be over in 6-7 minutes.

• Mumbai gets a new landmark.

• Development of promenade and landscaping to enhance the environment.
Mumbai, well known for its filmy duniya, got a new platform for the tourist attraction.

Recognizing the opportunity, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has expanded its arms and is planning to run open-deck buses on the sea link. The BEST has on mind the fact that people’s enthusiasm to see the modern structure is at a peak and the development of promenade and landscaping to enhance the environment.
