National Sports Bill: Top Athletes Supports National Sports Bill INDIA

Posted: 13 Nov 2011 07:33 PM PST

The Indian Olympic Association and the federations might be contrary to it but the National Sports Bill has got a collective thumbs up from India’s peak athletes, who seem the preliminary has the promise to drastically change the country’s sports scene.

Welcoming provisions like the one searching a 25 percent quota for athletes in all National Sports Federations (NSFs), present and previous stars for example badminton ace Saina Nehwal, her adviser Pullela Gopichand, Jwala Gutta, golfer Jeev Milkha Singh and Olympic bronze-medallist boxer Vijender Singh wanted that the article would get the cabinet’s nod.

The account was turned down previous by the cabinet with ministers, who have stakes in diverse federations, inquiring Sports Minister Ajay Maken to rework the draft.

The contentious points in the account encompassed the provision on convey NSFs under the RTI ambit and limiting the age and tenure of office-bearers.

Saina said the NSFs should take the account as a affirmative step in the direction of advancing the state of activities in Indian sports.

“All National Sports Federations should take the Sports Bill in a affirmative sense. It locations sports and sportspersons as a main concern which can only be healthy Indian sports,” Saina said.

Jeev and famous sprinter P T Usha sensed the account will make the sports view in India more professional.

“For far too long we have acknowledged mediocrity in Indian sports. The Sports Bill will make National Sports Federations proactive and expert in their approach. With sportsmen themselves at the helm of activities, there is compelled to be knowledgable authority and expanded sense of responsibility. We all should support the Bill,” he said.

“For so numerous decades, the major annoyance has been inefficiency of the National Sports Federations. I accept as factual that the Sports Bill will make a very affirmative change to this,” supplemented famous sprinter PT Usha.

Former All England champion Gopichand, who is engaged grooming shuttlers as nationwide adviser now, said he backs the account as it hunts for to boost athletes’ participation in the management of sports.

“This new account is certain thing which is healthy sports, particularly for athletes. The 25 percent representation of sportspersons in the nationwide federations, I believe that it is a good proceed, to have athletes’ participation in decision-making is good. So general, I support this bill,” Gopichand said.

Ace boxer Vijender echoed the outlook, saying the account will empower athletes.

“I have gone through it, it’s a very good bill. I wish it is passed soon. The provision that I like the most in it is 25 percent quota for athletes in all sports federations,” said the World Championship bronze-medallist.

“The provision of conveying federations under RTI is furthermore good, the BCCI should accept it. Hopefully, it will convey transparency in sports,” he supplemented, mentioning to Indian Cricket Board’s denial to arrive under the RTI ambit.

Sprint legend Milkha Singh called the account a “bold step” in the direction of a better future for Indian sports.

“I commend Makenji (Sports Minister) for inserting this account and I wish it gets through the Cabinet and the Parliament. This is a bold step but I can glimpse it will be a tough job as numerous National Sports Federations have leaders and secretaries who are ministers and MPs and they are influential,” he said.

“I recall Margaret Alva handing out a note that leaders of NSFs should not have more than two periods and IAS and IPS agents should take Home Ministry consent before challenging NSF elections. All these failed. I was in that managing assembly of sports ministry 35 years back,” he added.

Milkha said putting a hat on age and tenure of office-bearers would double-check that the NSFs are run professionally and admonished the BCCI for resisting the provision considering RTI.

“I completely support the age and tenure limitation provisions. What will a 70 in addition to individual manage in NSFs? They can direct athletes like I manage but occupying the seating is a distinct matter. I can’t realise why the Cricket Board is resisting to RTI Act being directed in all the NSFs,” he said.

“It will convey transparency and its for betterment of Indian sports. I desire to inquire is cricket not an Indian sport?

“I furthermore greeting the provisions of 25 percent booking of athletes in NSFs as athletes should have a state in conclusion making,” he added.

Star cueist Pankaj Advani furthermore marvelled why the BCCI was resisting the bill.

“BCCI is conspicuously the best sports federation of the country. But it should arrive under the government. Only then you can call yourself Team India. Otherwise it would be called Team BCCI. I believe it should arrive under the purview of the government,” he said..

He furthermore sustained the Sports Minister’s contention that NSFs in the homeland should be clear and accountable.

“I did seem that the Sports Minister is correct when he said that there should be accountability. Federations should be clear in what they do. If that is the entire concept of the account, then I am up for it,” he added.

Billiards legend Michael Ferreira too endorsed the account saying that it is high time the long-serving agents make way for new faces.

“It will shatter the long monopoly of those office-bearers in the NSFs who have been there for years and have vested interests. Making every federation accountable can only be good. If you love games, assist it as an one-by-one, why manage you require to be an official? Obviously there are allotments of perks and privileges that proceed with it,” Ferreira explained.

“Why is this account draconian (as recounted by the IOA)? I believe the IOA furthermore has to be shuffled. You got to have new body-fluid, you require to infuse new power into the system,” he said.

He furthermore called on the BCCI to accept the RTI provision.

“BCCI should be made an NSF and conveyed under the ambit of RTI. They should be made accountable. All the political leaders are affiliated with the BCCI for their individual glory. They all desire to fire the account down with their clout.

“The BCCI is enjoying digressive advantages from the government like levy respite, security for retaining agrees and land. BCCI should be conveyed under the RTI,” Ferreira said.

Ace women’s doubles badminton contestant Jwala Gutta, who along with her colleague Ashwini Ponnappa, became the first Indian two to win a bronze medal in the World Championship in Paris this year, furthermore provided a thumbs up to the bill.

“I wholeheartedly acquiesce with the bill. I believe it is a large start by the Sports Minister. Maken is managing a good job in evolving sports general and not just a twosome of games. The account will convey transparency and assist the sport,” she said.

“I don’t realise the persons who are resisting it, what are they shocked off. If they don’t have any thing to conceal then why can’t they arrive under the RTI? There should be transparency in assortment of players, in accounting and this account can assist to manage that,” Poonia added.

Discuss thrower Poonia said the account will take Indian sports ahead by encompassing athletes in the method of decision-making.

“I completely support the account and I am joyous that the Sports Minister is inserting the bill. I believe it will take Indian sports ahead,” she said.

“My full support to the 25 percent booking of athletes in the boss bodies of NSFs. The athletes themselves understand their difficulties and this will give athletes a function in conclusion making,” she added.

Poonia sensed limiting the tenure of agents will advance administration.

“The age and tenure limitation provisions are greeting as I believe persons overhead 70 years are not fit to run sports bodies. They should be more taking care of their wellbeing rather than of Indian sports.

“I furthermore support he proceed to convey sports bodies under RTI as it will convey transparency in their working. The supreme objective should be the betterment of Indian sports and sportspersons by conveying in transparency,” she explained.
