Cyclone Thane News: Cyclone Thane Makes Heavy Rains & Landfall In Puducherry & Cuddalore

Cyclone Thane has hit the coast of Tamil Nadu, making landfall between Puducherry and Cuddalore. Puducherry is currently witnessing heavy rainfall and strong wind. Government officials have asked people to stay indoors.

The landfall happened very close to Cuddalore, southeast of Puducherry. The system is likely to move westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu coast, close to south of Puducherry, within a few hours and weaken gradually. As a result very heavy rainfall will continue over Northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Rayalseema.

“The cyclone is in the process of crossing between Cuddalore and Puducherry coast. The wind speed is around 140 kmph at Puducherry and Cuddalore. Waves measuring 1.5 metres height are hitting the shoreline,” an official from Indian Meteorological Department official told IANS.

Wind speed is likely to reach 145 kmph along and off north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts during next three hours and then decrease gradually. The windy conditions in places like Puducherry and Chennai have already damaged property with many trees, poles and thatched roofs uprooted.

“We don’t know what is happening in the outside world. All that we have been hearing since last night is the howling of the wind. Several trees have fallen down. Even mobile phone signals are not proper,” S Ravikumar, a Puducherry resident, told IANS.

Storm surge of about 1.0 to 1.5 meter above the astronomical tide is likely to inundate the low lying areas of Puducherry, Chennai, Tiruvallu, Kanchipuram and Villupuram districts of north Tamil Nadu.

Even after the landfall, the system is likely to maintain its intensity for 12 hours even after landfall weakens gradually. Under its influence rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and isolated extremely heavy fall is likely to continue over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in next 24 hours.

Schools buildings in Chennai have been turned into shelter homes and the entire city is on high alert. So far, there have been no confirmed reports on the height of the waves and sea level but it is rising.

There is power outage in many parts of Puducherry and adjoining districts.

The weather officer has advised local administrations to evacuate people from low-lying areas as property is likely to be damaged extensively and escape routes are also likely to be flooded.

Eight teams of the National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) have been sent to the coastal areas. Two of these teams will be in Andhra Pradesh, rest six in Tamil Nadu in view of the cyclone warning.

The districts of Cudallore, Puducherry and Nagapattinam are expected to receive maximum rain.

Another 15,000 men of the NDRF are on alert.

A weather scientist had earlier said that Cyclone Thane would probably be half in intensity than that of the super-cyclone that struck Orissa in 1999 which packed wind speed of more than 220 km per hour.

Michael Jordan is engaged to longtime girlfriend Yvette Prieto, a Cuban-American model he’s been dating for three years.

Publicist Estee Portnoy confirmed the news Thursday, first reported by television station WCNC in Charlotte.

The Charlotte Bobcats owner got engaged over the Christmas weekend. No wedding date has been set.

Jordan, an NBA Hall of Famer who won six titles with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, is 48. Prieto is 32.

This will be Jordan’s second marriage. He married Juanita Vanoy in September 1989, and they divorced in 2006. They have two sons, Jeffrey Michael and Marcus James, and a daughter, Jasmine.

“We shot in the middle of the desert. It was very rustic, hot and dusty. I was parched and completely dehydrated but I couldn’t even drink water because they didn’t want my stomach jutting out,” reminisces the actor.

Story: The story revolves around Raghu Kumar (Rajiv Roda), who is a young trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. The IPS officer and his wife resolve not to earn bribes in the police, but when Raghu goes to the district police in Kolhapur and then to Mumbai police, he starts confronting the real picture. What he comes across is a profound nexus of police, bureaucrats, power-brokers, and politicians – all hidden by a glittering curtain of 'Rule of Law' and administrative sophistication. He further becomes the victim of power and whether he will get justice, remains the question?

Story Treatment: The story is predictable, but an effort to not preach or teach anything while narration is commendable. Also, an attempt at trying to make a real movie adds few brownie points. However, an extremely dragged storyline makes the attempt tasteless. Few scenes are an evidence of making the narration filmy and make you wonder about the overemphasised display of situations.

Star Cast: Rajiv Roda exhibits emotions moderately and tries to do justice to the character. Bobby Vats makes his presence feel, while Saurabh Dubey also leaves an impact as a helpless police commissioner. Shalini Chandran is effective with her portrayal of a strong wife and is convincing with her emotional scenes.

Direction: The director has tried to be loyal to his intentions, however, poor characterisations and below average acting take away the chance from the director to grab attention. An over stretched narration of every scene makes the movie a dull affair. YP Singh shows the life of police officers in a quite true to life manner.

Dialogues/cinematography/music: Dialogues are mediocre and leave no impact. Cinematography is decent, while had the editing been crispier, it would have definitely helped the final product. The songs have very little to offer; Woh Sunehare Din is soothing on ears. Tere Pass Hai Danda Toh Mere Pass Hai Bumm is an attempt to add an item number to the flick. Overall, expecting less is the best way to avoid dissatisfaction.

3ups and downs: A predictable and long-drawn-out storyline is one of the biggest drawbacks of the movie. However, a true attempt to make a different flick could be a reason to watch it. Neither big Bollywood names nor sufficient publicity will also act like a hitch for the film.

Former chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province Dost Muhammad Khosa has been booked for the kidnapping of actress Sapna whom he had married, a media report said.

The police registered the case against Khosa and his accomplices following a court order, Geo News from Lahore reported Thursday.

A petition had been filed in Lahore High Court for the recovery of the actress.

The petitioner had said that Sapna has been missing for eight months and police were not supporting them.

The family feared that Khosa, who had married Sapna, has been killed.

Khosa had admitted in the High Court that he had married Sapna but later divorced her. He said he did not know about her whereabouts.

Investigation disclosed that spa, where sex prostitution business was flourishing, had been rented out to its owner by one of city’s top cops, DCP Nandkumar Chougule.

An intense two-week-long investigation to trace a flourishing prostitution racket to its source has led the police to an address owned by one of their own men.

A raid conducted by officers of the Social Service (SS) Branch at the Cleopatra Day Spa located in Seven Bungalows, Andheri (West) — and subsequent investigations — have revealed that the proprietor of the

MHADA plot is one of the guardians of law and order in the city — the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Nandkumar Chougule.

Chougule had rented out the plot to Saroj Bhakuni, who allegedly converted it to a swank spa, only to use it as a front for her dubious trade.

While cops have been quick to register an FIR against Bhakuni and two of her colleagues who were assisting her in operating the racket. But they seem to be dragging their feet when it comes to booking one of their own men.

Going by precedents set by similar investigations in the past, it is customary for the SS Branch to book and arrest the proprietors of the premises found running prostitution rackets. But inside sources claim that the officers of the SS branch have capitulated to the mounting pressure put on it by the DCP, and shoved the matter under the proverbial carpet, refraining from forwarding the shocking piece of information to their superiors.

Investigations carried out by MiD DAY have revealed that the bungalow is registered under the name of Chougule’s wife Madhuri.

However, it is Chougule who handles all the paperwork on behalf of his spouse. Chougule had rented out the plot to Bhakuni on the basis of a leave-and-license agreement.

The latter then took permission to run a spa in the premises, but appears to have used it as cover for what was in reality the headquarter of a sex-trade racket.

“More than seven girls involved in the flesh trade were rescued from the premises, during the raid on December 10. We have arrested the spa owner, Saroj Bhakuni, and two of her colleagues under the Prevention of Immoral Traffic Act. The details regarding the ownership of the bungalow have been forwarded to the local police station, where officers are making further investigations,” said an officer from the SS branch, on condition of anonymity.

“Chougule was unaware of what was happening within the premises of the property owned by him. There is a clearly articulated clause in the agreement, which unequivocally states that if any illegal activities are carried out within the bungalow, Chougule is free to terminate the agreement,” said a police officer from Versova police station.

The raid
On December 10, the SS Branch sent one of its officers as a decoy customer to the Cleopatra Day Spa, after receiving a tip-off about the illegal activities thriving within the premises.

When the decoy corroborated the information received in the tip-off, officials swooped in and arrested Bhakuni and her accomplices, invoking the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act.

The arresting team also recovered a cheque worth Rs 36,000, two bill books and cash worth Rs 64,700 cash from the counter. All three accused were produced before a court and were remaded in police custody till December 12.

Investigating officials divulged that the staff members of the spa used to liaise with regular customers and dispatch female sex-trade workers to offer their services.

The other side
When contacted, DCP Nandkumar Chougule refused to comment on the matter. When the Commissioner of Police was contacted after a slew of phone calls and messages, he said, “I will check and revert.”
