Bangalore University admission fee to be paid every year

Posted: 14 Nov 2010 10:27 AM PST

Mathang Seshagiri & Sruthy Susan Ullas | TNN

Bangalore: Here's a shocker for lakhs of students in Bangalore University's 600 affiliated colleges. You'll have to pay the admission fee for every year of your course. The BU Syndicate decided to collect this fee for all under-graduate courses, even for second, third and fourth years. Hitherto, it was collected only in the first year during admission. Similarly, post -graduate students will have to cough up the admission fee for the second year too. BU's fee plan to rake in crores
Bangalore: The move — by the Bangalore University asking students to pay admission fee every year — is expected to bring in crores of rupees as admission fees range from Rs 500 to Rs 13,500. Sample this: The number of first-year UG students in BU at present is 1 lakh. While second-year students are 84,871, there are 65,764 studying in their third year.

The move has angered college principals who view it as a burden on students. Said S Harish, principal, Vijaya Evening College: "The university cannot forget its social responsibility. Most economically backward students come to my college.

They work in the morning and continue their education in the evening. This will be a major burden on them."

Some others like T Narayanappa, principal, BES College, hope the syndicate will review its decision or lower the fee for second and third years. "The BU has not added any additional fee for several years. But then some college managements are already burdening students by collecting development fees and amenity fees. This must stop,'' he said.

K G Lokesh, former president, BU College Teachers Association: "The university will have to take into consideration the cost of living in Bangalore. It's bound to affect students.''

BU is also contemplating a processing fee for giving degree certificates issued to students of autonomous colleges.
